Jodie Maren Newell was born in El Paso, TX to Nancy Hansen Parks, who was one of the most popular riding instructors in the area at the time. Along with Nancy's students, Jodie grew up riding bareback, speeding through the desert hills, jumping bushes and riding horses through the Dairy Queen Drive-thru. The only time she rode in a saddle was when it was required at the hunter/jumper horse shows she attended. Every summer, she spent time at her family's ranch in New Mexico, where they ran a summer camp for children. The activities included working cattle and riding up and down the steep, rocky, Black Range Mountains.
At age 12, she started reining lessons with Josh Armstrong, and became heavily involved in showing english and western at the local Quarter Horse shows. Her show horse, Heza Champas, helped her win several SWQHA youth high point awards. In 2001, they competed at the AQHYA World Show in the over-fences classes. Later, she moved to Aubrey, TX where she worked for several well known reining, reined cow horse, and cutting trainers. Her favorite job was working at the Babcock Ranch as an assistant trainer to Ron Ralls. Her daily responsibilities included developing the reining/ cow horses in the program with Ron's guidance and riding/tending to the needs of the famous stallion, Smart Chic Olena. http://www.equisearch.com/online-extra/smart-chic-olena/
A few years later, she found herself frustrated with horses, and wondering what happened to the
joy and fun she used to share with them as a child. It was an answer to her prayers when a good friend, Debbie Adcock, introduced her to the Parelli Natural Horsemanship program. She finally found what she had been searching for, the realization that horses can be partners, and that the enjoyment of achieving horsemanship goals can be mutual to the horse and human.
In Sept 2009 she performed a finesse spotlight with her mustang mare, Surprise. Afterwards, Pat Parelli offered her a scholarship for an externship to the Parelli Center. She headed to the Florida campus in Aug 2010 with her palomino gelding, Cadbury. While in Florida, she and Cadbury got to be part of one of the first ParelliConnect T.V. commercials. Yes, she was quoted as saying she was once a "professional ice cream scooper":-). She received her 2nd star as a Parelli Professional in Mar 2011, and shortly after, worked at Camp Lonehollow in Vanderpool, TX. She enjoyed sharing the joy of Parelli Natural Horsemanship with the hundreds of children and the wranglers she taught there.
She later married her best friend, James. Their daughter was born in 2015. In Jan 2016 she resigned as a Licensed Parelli Instructor in order to spend more time with her family and avoid the travel required to maintain her license. She still loves and practices the principles taught in the Parelli program. She is currently teaching horsemanship/ horseback riding lessons in Aubrey, TX to beginner through advanced level children and adults. She helps her students develop a relationship with either their own horse, or a lesson horse both on the ground and while riding. She also enjoys teaching Sunday school to the youth at her church where her and her husband are very involved.
She is excited about continuing to practice never ending self improvement with her horsemanship goals, and even more thrilled to help others achieve their dreams with horses. She passed her Parelli level 4 in April 2013, and soon after returned to the AQHA show arena showing her horse Cadbury. They qualified and competed at the 2013 AQHA World show in the Ranch Horse Pleasure class (now called Ranch Riding). She has a goal of showing her up and coming young horse, Mango, at the Buckskin World show this year in Ranch Riding. Her and her students have also become very involved in the Cowboy Dressage shows and have begun competing in all the north Texas area shows. Learning Cowboy Dressage helps them to understand soft feel and to learn to have more precision when they show at their drill team competitions.
With a strong background in horse training, she specializes in teaching her students how to teach their horse. No matter what their goals are. It is her goal to help them succeed. Whether their goal is to have a fun, safe, backyard horse partner, or to compete when they are ready. Either way..... it is not about the awards, it is about winning your horse's heart with a goal in mind:-)
She can't wait to meet you on the journey and help you become the person that your horse would
love for you to be!
